Faith, Hope, Love

Faith, Hope, Love

Faith may waiver, hope may hang its head, and love may wax cold, but they can never be lost.  They are given at the new birth and they hold our hand through death. (more…)

We live in an ever-changing world.  Fads, philosophies, and people come and go but these three graces remain. They are the essence of the Christian life.  Learn how they can improve your life today.

1 Corinthians 13:13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Our text is captivating.

The Apostle Paul, moved by the Holy Ghost, wrote a scathing letter to the Corinthian church.  Not only were they excusing appalling sin, but also they were fighting over the spiritual gifts. To cut through the confusion, God draws their attention to the significance of faith, hope, and love.

Faith, hope, and love are exalted as the trinity of Christian graces that rise above all others.  They abide when all else fails.

Faith may waiver, hope may hang its head, and love may wax cold, but they can never be lost.  They are given at the new birth and they hold our hand through death. (more…)

How To Increase Our Faith

How To Increase Our Faith

Have you ever wished you had more faith? Learn how to increase your faith in God with these steps from the Bible.

In our text, the Lord Jesus Christ taught the disciples some hard lessons on forgiveness.

Luke 17:3–5

“Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him. And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.”

Forgiveness is necessary. God forgave us. He expects us to forgive others. We must even forgive the same person repeatedly if they repent. This revelation blew the disciples’ minds!

Forgiveness is one of the most challenging duties of the Christian life. It is contrary to fleshly wisdom. It requires elevation of petty feelings of offense, anger, malice, and revenge.

The Bible gives us four ways to increase our faith. Click To Tweet

Unforgiveness is a sin. It is one of the most hurtful and ignored sins among Christians.

This article is not about forgiveness. Although forgiveness is a worthy study, we don’t have the space in this article to discuss forgiveness, the levels of forgiveness, and how to forgive.

Today, we focus on the phrase, “Increase our faith.”

The Disciples recognized that they didn’t have the strong faith required to take the next step of obedience. They needed more faith!

The idea that we need more faith to accomplish God’s will can be applied to many areas of life. As you grow in grace, your faith will need to increase.

Some people have stopped following Christ because they sense their inability to obey what God commanded. The Apostles recognized that they didn’t have what they needed, but the Lord did. They asked Him to increase their faith.

Examples of Faith (found in the Bible)

Examples of Faith (found in the Bible)

God expects His people to live by faith. But what does living by faith look like? These examples of faith found in Hebrews chapter eleven will encourage your heart and strengthen your confidence in God.

Hebrews 11 is an incredible chapter detailing what faith is, what faith does, and what faith can do for you. It overflows with precious truths about faith.

There are 17 people named in Hebrews 11 as examples of those who showed faith. This portion of Scripture is known as the Hall of Faith.

These testimonies are patterns of faith meant to encourage us to believe God.

How do we learn to live by faith? We learn in the same way we learn other things.

There are three categories of learning.

  • Teaching – This includes every form of education, including reading, studying, and listening.
  • Time – This is learning by life experience over time.
  • Testimony – This is learning from the testimony and example of others. Modeling is the most potent form of teaching and the most memorable form of learning.

God has given us examples of faith. These testimonies of what faith did in others’ lives are powerful illustrations of what God can do through your faith.

Consider each of the people mentioned in Hebrews 11 and what their faith can teach us.

Hannah is known as the mother of the great prophet Samuel. But that is only the end of the story. Learn how Hannah’s faith in God gave her a son and gave Israel one of its greatest prophets. The same faith is available to you today.

It is impossible to overestimate the worth of a godly woman.

Proverbs 31:10 says, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.”

Hannah was such a woman. Her story is immortalized in the Word of God forever. Let’s examine her life to learn valuable lessons about faith.

The account of Hannah is found in 1 Samuel chapters 1 and 2. She was the first of Elkanah’s two wives and was barren. Elkanah loved her and favored her above his second wife, giving her preferential treatment.

Yet, her heart was broken. She needed a miracle.

Let’s find out how she got one.

Choose The Right Fear (Fear Of The LORD)

Choose The Right Fear (Fear Of The LORD)

Everyone is afraid of something. Fear is not the enemy. It is a necessary part of life. The key to life is choosing the right things of which to be afraid.

What are you afraid of today?

I remember some of my fears from childhood. Were you ever afraid of:

  • The dark?
  • Monsters under the bed?
  • The opposite gender in grade school? Remember “cooties” anyone?

What is fear?

Fear is the emotional dread of impending doom. Most of the things people fear never come to pass.

This acrostic for fear adequately describes it.

F.E.A.R. = False Evidence Appearing Real.

Fear can cause a misinterpretation of the facts. The key is to focus on what you know, not what you think might happen.

I’m not advocating you pretend like everything is ok when it’s not. Rather, I’m encouraging you to exercise faith.

You will either fear God or everything else. Click To Tweet

Fear steals courage. Faith gives it. Fear robs strength. Faith imparts strength! Fear focuses on the unknown. Faith concentrates on God.

Satan loves fear. It is his tool to wreak havoc. Fearful people are prone to bad decisions and are easy to control.

Not all fear is bad, however.

Living By Faith

Living By Faith

God intends for His people to live by faith. What does it mean to live by faith? Are you living by faith today? Let’s find out.

The word “faith” is used 253 times in the King James Bible. The Bible’s emphasis on faith is undeniable. We are saved by faith in Jesus Christ. We are to live by faith in God and His Word.

Romans 1:17

“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”

Some mock the faith of believers. How many times has a Christian been attacked for being “dumb enough” to believe? How many new believers have been questioned by family and friends? The intelligencia crowd ridicules a life of faith saying things like, “I won’t believe it unless I see it.”

I don’t apologize for believing in God. In fact, I don’t have enough faith to be an atheist!

Did you know that everyone lives by faith of a sort?

“Faith is an affectionate practical confidence in the testimony of God.”~ J. Hawes Click To Tweet

We make faith-based decisions all day every day. Before you sit in a chair, you decide if it can hold your weight. Before you eat at a restaurant, you decide if it is safe. When you drive down the road, you trust the other person to stay on their side of the yellow line.

Someone will say, “Not true! I live by science and statistics.” By their own admission, they have faith in science and statistics. Did they gather the information themselves? No. Did they correlate the information? No. Did they see the results with their own eyes? No. Did they double-check to confirm the findings? No. The list could go on. Do you see how faith is involved in the simplest decisions we make every day?

In this way, the atheist and agnostic live by faith along with the religious person. Why? We are creatures of faith. God made every human to live by faith. The only question is, “What are you putting your faith in?”

What is faith? Let’s look at the definition of faith to make sure we are on the same page and learn how to live by faith.
