Below is a concise answer to the question “Is Jesus God?”.
It was asked online. This was my response. I confess that this short blog is not worthy of the subject. There is much more that could and should be said. Feel free to add your favorite verses in the comments section.
The Bible declares without doubt or apology that JESUS CHRIST IS GOD!
This subject is vital to our faith. It has long been in the cross hairs of our enemy. Satan is the author of confusion. He takes the already difficult to understand eternal truths of God and uses his smoke and mirrors to complicate them. If we are seeking the truth about God we must study and trust His Word. (Is 55:6-11)
There are many Bible proofs that Jesus, the Son of God, is FULLY God. (Col 2.8-9) For example, the prophecies required that Immanuel would come. (Is 7:14) Immanuel means “God with us”. (Mt 1:23)
Also, a Biblical definition of the name “Son of God” leaves little room for doubt in our Saviour’s Deity. The Son is equal to the Father. (Jn 5:18-23) The Jews understood this and ultimately fulfilled the Scripture by crucifying Christ because they did not believe He was God.
However, I believe the strongest argument of all that Jesus Christ is God is in the fact that God the Father calls Him God. Hebrews 1:8 “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” God declares repeatedly in Scripture that Jesus Christ is GOD. This is a fact of Scripture. The only question that remains is “Can God be trusted?” We know that God cannot lie. (Titus 1:2) God left a record of His Son. Every soul must decide whether or not they believe God’s testimony concerning Jesus Christ. (I Jn 5:9-13; Jn 5:24) It is this decision that will determine one’s eternal destination. To reject the Son is to reject the Father
I go a step further and submit that if Jesus Christ was not God in the flesh that He could not have secured our salvation. (Ro 10:9-10 “Lord”) The magnificence of the gospel is that God died for man and raised Himself from the dead proving His victory over sin and death! (Jn 3:16; II Cor 5:18-21; Phil 2:5-11; Rev 5:9-14)
If you would allow me one more word…
When it comes to the study of the deity of Christ, the Bible you use will have an impact on your findings. There are many good people and believers in our Saviour that are not aware of the major differences in Bible translations.
I believe strongly that a Bible based on the Textus Receptus greek New Testament should be used for true doctrinal study. The most famous of these is the King James. It is more of an issue that old vs modern English and much of the information readily available is one sided toward the new versions and misleading. Most of the new translations are based on the Westcott/Hort greek text or the Nestle/Aland greek text. These texts are notorious for watering down vital doctrines such as the deity of Christ. The Westcott/Hort was compiled by avowed unbelievers in Christ and His Deity. This is a topic for another day and always elicits passionate response. However, for the purpose of this topic, I recommend that you look up the verses mentioned in the KJV and you will experience an increased faith.
I am truly thankful for this group of Bereans that desire to know God and His Word better. (Acts 17:10-12) I am often reminded that the truth is not afraid of questions. After all the questions are asked and the smoke clears the truth remains true. It stands above question, doubt and criticism. The world, the flesh and the devil will try to crush truth, but it will always rise above the fray and the only question that remains is the only one that truly matters. Do I believe it?
God bless,
Paul Chapman
Thanks Paul. You are doing a great job. Please share with me any more material on the Greek texts.I’m a preacher, and would like to inform the church I lead on the issue of the various translations,so as to help them choose a translation that’s not watered down.Let’s all be apologists of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
