Did you get a check from the government? Should you tithe on it? The answer is clear. Consider this short explanation.
During the Coronavirus lockdown of 2020, the US government is sending every qualifying American a stimulus check. (Didn’t get yours?) You should tithe off of it. In fact, you should tithe off of any government stimulus check. Here’s why.
Proverbs 3:9–10 “Honour the LORD with thy substance, And with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”
The Bible is crystal clear that we should honor God with the firstfruits of all our “increase.” It doesn’t stipulate a difference between wealth gained by working a job, gift, or inheritance. It all comes from God.
When things get tight financially, it seems harder to give, but is it?
God commands us to walk by faith and not by sight. Share on XIf I gave you a $100 bill, would you give me $10 back? Of course! How much more should we partner with God to do the same!
God gives you everything that you possess.
James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
God gives us life, breath, relationships, and all of our worldly possessions. He makes eternal salvation available through faith Jesus Christ.
As an act of faith and obedience, He requires of what He give you 10% back.
Leviticus 27:30 “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord.”
Malachi 3:8–11 “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, Even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be meat in mine house, And prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, If I will not open you the windows of heaven, And pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, And he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; Neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.”

In this age, we give our tithe and offerings to God through the local church we attend.
1 Corinthians 16:2 “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”
I understand that times are tough, and finances are thin. Yet, we don’t obey the Lord only when it is convenient. We obey Him because He is LORD of all. We are commanded to walk by faith and not by sight. If we obey God in the little things, He will give us wisdom and power to obey Him in the big (or difficult) things.
In fact, we need His financial blessing and protection if trying times more than ever.
Conclusion
Should you tithe off of your government stimulus check? Yes!
God will bless you for it and you won’t regret it.
I have been thinking a lot about this and truly believe IF all Christians would do this, there would be an abundance of finances for churches and faith based ministries to help those truly in need. I know TITHING is not commanded for believers today but I believe it is a great blessing to do so. I read where a person said we already paid a tithe on it since it is from the government but not sure I agree or understand how that works. MAYBE if a person tithes on their gross income? but how many people do that?
Thanks for your comment. I’m glad the article was a blessing. I agree that if God’s people were obedient givers that ministries would have the funds to fulfill God’s plan. The New Testament focuses on Grace Giving. The tithe is the lowest amount of giving acceptable to God. Grace giving is allowing God to direct you to give by faith becoming a conduit for Him to give through you.
Your question about tithing and taxes is a good one. These articles may help clear it up. God bless!
