An unbiblical philosophy of money has ruined many people. Will you be another casualty?
1 Timothy 6:9 “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.”
In the Bible, the word “riches” speaks of abundance. Usually, it means the wealth of money and possessions. This verse warns that money has unique temptations. Let’s learn them so we can protect ourselves.
Desire for Riches
Money represents power, possessions, and options. Who wouldn’t like to have extra money after all the bills are paid? Who wouldn’t want the choices that riches provide? We all would.
Yet, the desire for money can become controlling. Covetousness strongly desires the possessions of others. It leads to jealousy creating the feeling that you are missing out.
Often people who gain a measure of wealth become greedy. They just want more. Money becomes a false god. They think it will solve all their problems, but they couldn’t be more wrong.

The desire for riches is a trap. God recommends contentment instead. Want what you have, and you will feel rich. Godliness with contentment is great gain.
Drowning for Riches
Riches drown people in foolish and hurtful lusts. How? The desire for riches leads people to do things they usually wouldn’t.
- Taking advantage of others for personal gain.
- Robbing God’s tithe and offerings.
- Neglecting family responsibilities.
- Lying & stealing.
- Disobeying God’s Word.
- Violating the conscience.
Everyone should be a diligent worker striving to make money for good and God. Yet, don’t lose sight of this vital truth. Money is a tool to be used, not a god to be worshipped. Don’t sacrifice your integrity for a few extra bucks.
Decide today that if God grants you earthly riches, you won’t allow them to change your commitment to Him or your desire to be like Jesus. Use your resources wisely, and God may give you more.
Destruction for Riches
The desire to be rich destroys people’s lives. It ruins marriages. It breaks up families. Earthly wealth is a carrot that Satan dangles in front of you to make you unhappy with your current situation. Then it makes you willing to do things you usually wouldn’t. This is the path of destruction and perdition.
Perdition in the Bible usually means destruction in hell. Often, the wealthy reject God and Christ. Jesus spoke of the difficulty of a rich man going to Heaven. It is a sad fact that many rich in this life will be tormented in the next.
Don’t fall for the temptation of Riches. Be content. Serve God.
