God and America are linked.  Some try to change history to deny this extraordinary relationship.  If America hopes to survive, she must turn back to God. Consider these ignored historical facts and God’s plan for the salvation of a nation.

America is a great nation because of her great God.  We wouldn’t even exist as a country if it were not for the miraculous work of the Lord.

After years of religious apathy, moral decay, and ungodly attack, America is fighting for her life.  Will she remain a Christian nation, or reject her God?

God’s plan of salvation for individuals is simple faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for remission of sins.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

This verse explains God’s plan of salvation for a nation.  God deals with nations in the Scripture.  They can be blessed or cursed.  They can be built or destroyed.  The only hope for America is a religious revival according to 2 Chronicles 7:14.  

Before we look at our text verse, let’s view  our nation through the light of God’s Word.  Consider these facts.

1. God chose the nation Israel to represent Him in the Old Testament.

Psalm 135:4

For the Lord hath chosen Jacob unto himself, And Israel for his peculiar treasure.

Deuteronomy 10:15

Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.

God chose the nation of Israel to represent Him in the Old Testament.  God made an everlasting covenant with them.
He spoke through them to the other nations of the world.  He gave them the oracles of God.  The Messiah came through Israel.

2. In the New Testament, every Christian is God’s Ambassador.

2 Corinthians 5:19–20

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

In the New Testament age, Christians are the representatives of God.  We are His ambassadors.

An ambassador is an official representative of a Monarch or nation who represents the power and relays messages of the sovereign while living in a foreign country.

That’s who we are!  We represent the Lord of glory in this sinful world.

3. God has uniquely blessed America and used her to spread the Gospel around the world.

God was involved in America from the beginning. Consider the following supernatural ways God has our blessed the United States.

Miraculous Conception.

56 men hazarded their lives by signing the Declaration of Independence.  Most gave everything to stand for this idea of a free America.

Benjamin Franklin was 81 years old at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in Philadelphia.  He urged the assembly to pray daily and seek guidance from “the Father.”

“I have lived a long time, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”

America was birthed by an act of God.

Divine Protection.

God has protected America supernaturally.

In the Revolutionary war, God allowed us to defeat the most powerful nation on Earth to become a sovereign nation.

In World War 1 and World War 2, God allowed us to beat a superior force.

America became a super power without equal in the world due to the providence of God.

Supernatural Production.

America has developed supernaturally.  

Consider how the U.S. grew to the land it now holds.  

Think of all the great inventions that have come from America.  We have changed the world.

The American economy is the envy of the world.

Did all this happen without the aid of the Almighty?  I think not.

Godly Intention.

America was founded by Christian men on the principles of the King James Bible.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalteth a nation: But sin is a reproach to any people.

Alexis de Tocqueville was a 19th century French diplomat.  He is best known for his two-volume work “Democracy in America.”  

Although some dispute its origin, it is said this quote came from de Tocqueville after visiting America.  

“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers – and it was not there . . . in her fertile fields and boundless forests and it was not there . . . in her rich mines and her vast world commerce – and it was not there . . . in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution – and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.”

America has been a singularly Christian nation throughout its history.

While other religions were tolerated, Christianity was preferred.

Consider these facts:

  • One of the first acts of Congress was to print Bibles to get the Gospel to American Indians.
  • God or the Divine is mentioned at least once in each of the 50 states constitutions and nearly 200 times overall.
  • Thomas Jefferson was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the Governor of Virginia, Secretary of State, and the third president of the United States.  He said, “I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be: sincerely attached to His doctrines in preference to all others.”
  • Patrick Henry was a revolutionary general, a ratifier of the Constitution, and the Governor of Virginia.  He said, “Being a Christian… is a character which I prize far above all this world has or can boast.”  He also said, “The Bible… is a book worth more than all the other books that were ever printed.”
  • John Adams was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a judge, a signer of the Bill of Rights and the second president of the United States.  Consider these quotes.
  • The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity.
  • I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.
  • Without religion, this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company: I mean hell.
  • The Christian religion is, above all the religions that ever prevailed or existed in ancient or modern times, the religion of wisdom, virtue, equity and humanity.
  • Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only law book and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited. . . . What a Eutopia – what a Paradise would this region be!
  • I have examined all religions, and the result is that the Bible is the best book in the world.

America was not founded on vague “religion” or empty ideas of a god.  

America was founded on the principles of Christianity!

“The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of
civil government with the principles of Christianity.”
John Quincy Adams

The Illinois Supreme Court gave this quote as part of their ruling in a case in 1883.

“Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible
that it should be otherwise. In this sense and to this extent, our
civilizations and our institutions are emphatically Christian.”

 “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great
nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians;
not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!” – Patrick Henry

As the final proof of our Christian heritage, consider the beginning of the Declaration of Independence.  

In Congress, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

God has uniquely blessed America.  We have sent more missionaries around the world heralding the Gospel than any other nation. We have a unique system of government and morality based on Judeo-Christian values.

However, God’s blessing is conditional.  If we turn on God as a nation, He will not only withhold His blessings, but pour out His judgement.

4. God rejected Israel when it turned on God.

God set Isreal aside after their rejection of the Saviour.  Today, He works through Christians and Churches.

God has not rejected Israel completely.

Romans 11:1

I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

God will use Israel again during the tribulation.

The Churches will be gone.  

There are 18 mentions of churches in Revelation chapters 1-3.  In Revelation 4:1, we see the call to “come up hither.”

Revelation 4:1

After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

The church is not mentioned again until Revelation 22:16.

Revelation 22:16

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

The Churches will be gone so God will use the nation of Israel to complete His work during the Great Tribulation.

Revelation 7:3–10

Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.

Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.

Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.

Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

God will call 144,000 Spirit-filled preachers to preach the Gospel during the Tribulation period.  The result will be a multitude of tribulation saints saved.  Even while the world quakes under the angry hand of God, His loving heart is still seeking and saving the lost who will believe.

5. The only hope for America is to turn back to God.

God will use Israel again during the tribulation.

America has no such promise.  God made no everlasting covenant with America.

Beware of making your theology revolve around your personal experience.  America is not the most important country in the world.  Israel is the most important country in God’s economy.

New York City is not the most important city in the world,  Jerusalem is the most important.  

Often, we look at third world countries as trying to “catch up” to America. Truthfully, these cultures are thousands of years old while America is only 244 years old as this is being written. These destitute countries are not behind us: they are ahead of us. They had the Gospel thousands of years ago. Their plight is the certain result of nations that have turned their back on God. As Americans, we will “catch up” to them if the turn our backs on the only true God.

Did you ever wonder why America is not mentioned in the book of Revelation?  She is not there.  Some think America is mentioned as one of the Babylons, but even if that were true she would be totally destroyed.  

America is living on borrowed time.  

America is a Christian nation.  Founded by people seeking religious and social freedom.  America has been uniquely blessed by God over its 244 year history.  Yet, we see trouble in our country today.  As the godless and idolatrous have gained ground in society, God’s blessing has waned.

Our nation’s only hope is to turn back to God!

There are two layers of righteousness in a nation.  

  1. Governmental righteousness.  That is the righteousness of its laws, precepts, and judgments.  America is running away from God in this area.  Laws that legalize killing babies and promoting sodomy stink in the nostrils of our thrice-holy God.
  2. Individual righteousness.  That is the righteousness of a nation’s citizens.  You cannot control the entire country, but you can manage yourself.  Let me encourage you.  Your personal righteousness matters!  God is looking to the righteous to save America.  God would have spared Sodom for 10 righteous souls.  I don’t know how many righteous people it will take to save our country, but you and I can make a start!  

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Revival starts with me.  It starts with you.  We must humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face, and turn from our wicked ways.  

Then we must boldly proclaim the Gospel to everyone we know teaching them to do the same after they are saved.

We change the world by changing OUR world.

American history is linked to the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ.  We have been uniquely blessed as we have followed Him.  

There is a growing movement to remove God from our nation and practice.  We must not let that happen.

Our only hope is to pray for mercy, turn to God ourselves, and win others to Christ.  Let’s get busy!
