Webster’s 1828 Dictionary gives us a deeper meaning of the word.

TEMPTA´TION, n.

The act of tempting; enticement to evil by arguments, by flattery, or by the offer of some real or apparent good.
When the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. Luke 4.
2. Solicitation of the passions; enticements to evil proceeding from the prospect of pleasure or advantage.
3. The state of being tempted or enticed to evil. When by human weakness you are led into temptation, resort to prayer for relief.
4. Trial.

Satan is the master tempter. He is very good at it. Countless lost souls and fallen Christians are his resume’ of destruction.

Temptation is a battle that you must face, but it is a battle you can win.

If the Lord can save our souls from eternal damnation, he can save us from temptation today.

Scripture is full of examples of people who were tempted. Some Bible characters yielded to temptation while others conquered it.

What was the difference? The Saviour is our ultimate example.

When our Lord Jesus was tempted of the Devil, He used the Word of God to defeat Him. Likewise, we must use the proven power of God’s eternal Word to conquer evil enticements.

John 8:31–32

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; ”

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
